Community programs
At the heart of Carey Right Track are our community programs, which run throughout the year in a number of regional communities.
Our programs aim to build deep, genuine, and long-lasting community connections, by empowering young people and emerging leaders through athletics. Our work, spread across Western Australia’s Midwest, has been sustained for more than a decade, which has helped us to build trust and mutual respect with the local communities we serve.
We understand that perhaps the most important thing we can do is enable & empower communities to lead these programs for themselves, which is why Carey Right Track is proud to partner with local community organisations.
We also work closely with local governments, including the Shires of Meekatharra, Yalgoo, and Mount Magnet. Our aim is to ensure that all Carey Right Track programs complement the year-round work that is essential for communities to flourish.
“The Shire of Yalgoo is greatly impressed by how Carey Right Track provides leading-edge athletics festivals: technical skill, working with stakeholders, and especially the dedication to the youth of remote and regional WA. Many talk a big game. Carey Right Track actually delivers tangible benefits to communities. It’s very rare to see an organisation achieve the impact that they do.”
- Tom Gorman, Deputy Chief Executive Officer, Shire of Yalgoo
Regional Programs
Our Regional Programs form an integral part of our Foundation. At the heart of these programs is the personalised approach created in consultation with local communities and stakeholders. Carey Right Track Foundation has a focus on developing deep meaningful connections with the children, youth and community and our goal to build local capacity and empower leaders to make positive change.
Our current Regional Programs communities include:
Yalgoo | Mt Magnet | Cue | Meekatharra | Pia Wadjarri | Burringurrah
Following the pillars and values of the Foundation, the deep connection with local communities has seen the empowerment of decision making amongst local people as well as the co-design of our programs. These programs designs have included;
Athletic development
Specific sport skills instruction
Youth engagement
School attendance and retention
Youth mentoring
Community development and events
Community sporting events
School wellbeing programs, staff and students
Individual education tutoring
We are so grateful to be able to work alongside amazing organisations that share our vision to empower individuals and communities through holistic education and athletic development.
Crossover
The Crossover program brings together indigenous and non-indigenous high school students from remote communities, culminating in a trip to Boorloo (Perth) to explore tertiary pathways.
This unique experience brings together educational, sporting, arts, life skills, and social activities, as well as highlighting post-school educational opportunities to inspire and widen the views of participants.
For some Crossover students, it will be their first visit to Boorloo. The program helps young people from remote communities to build on the relationships and networks they have established through Carey Right Track and our partner organisations.
“Students from Meekatharra District High School with the assistance of the Carey Right Track Foundation travelled 780km to Perth to explore opportunities available to our Youth. Exploring job opportunities and University programs in Perth not only provided practical insights into various career paths but also empowered the students with a sense of agency and ambition. As a result, the camp not only opened doors to promising career options but also instilled a resilient mindset, motivating them to strive for excellence and pursue goals that extend far beyond the limitations of their hometown. This experience serves as a catalyst for their future endeavours, demonstrating the profound impact of exposure and exploration in shaping the trajectories of these students' lives”
Louise Royal - Deputy Principal, Meekathara District High school.
Banksia Hill Detention Centre
In partnership with the Department of Justice, Carey Right Track has been providing support, mentoring, and athletics coaching to young people in Banksia Hill Detention Centre since 2014.
This annual ten-week program provides support and mentoring to assist detainees to equip themselves for life after their release.
In late 2022, the Department of Justice invited Carey Right Track to run a year-round Saturday morning mentoring program for male and female detainees.
